What is a Soffit? I Googled it...

Do you know what a soffit is? I honestly probably wouldn’t if it wasn’t for working for the Hopkins crew. A soffit, according to Google--is “the underside of an architectural structure such as an arch, a balcony, or overhanging eaves”. The word ‘soffit’ is very common around here in the PNW.

Soffit boards are one of the highest volume items that leave our shops. Typically they are pine or cedar and are coated with at least 2 layers of a clear coat – with more water-borne materials now being used. We have stained and painted them all different colors and coated them with both matte and high shine clear coats-- all dependent on what the client desires.

We also work on soffits out in the field by pressure-washing them (usually with a chemical treatment) to clean them, and then we apply the necessary finishes and amount of coats needed. If a soffit is given the opportunity to sit without being cleaned, you may accrue a thick layer of mildew, and, if you've waited too long, it may eat into the finish, damaging the raw soffit itself (which is incredibly difficult to fix).

I bet you want to run out and see what kind of soffits you might have and if they could use a little TLC..

Pro Tip: To keep your soffits beautiful for longer be sure to clean them at least once a year. If you’re not sure, contact your DG Hopkins Painting, or your local painter to have them check it out.
